This research into lithium is still fully developing. My interest in this material grew over the years. At first it was just one of these interesting white powders you find in a glaze. After a while it became one of my favourite ingredients when coming across a glaze recipe. It almost always made a good surface, interesting colours, a nice texture.
But working with these raw materials for years, several questions come to mind. Where do they come from? Who else is using them? Why did anyone start using this or that material in a glaze in the first place? What do they do on their own?
Gradually the anonymous white substances get their own characteristics.
Lithium conquered a hotspot in my curiosity when I started looking for it outside the ceramic field.
It is used as a medicine for people with bipolar disorder.
It is in our everyday wireless lives, in our phones, cordless machines, portable devices.
People say this it is the new gold.
It is mostly invisible, yet indispensable today.
Would philosophers today call it a hyperobject?
And if it was, could I summon its own personality by firing it up in a kiln?
Would it speak to us? Reveal itself? Would that be worth the sight?
Could we learn anything from it?
Would we look differently at all these raw materials we are mining from this planet?
We care for animals, plants, trees, water. They are precious to us.
Could we look at minerals and ores in the same way once we look at the beauty revealed?
